About the book
Unfinished tasks, worries, conversations and tomorrow’s responsibilities often demand attention just when you want to rest. Leave It on the Page is a guided bedtime journal that gives them a place on paper, so you can organise what matters for tomorrow and gently close the day.
Each of the 90 undated evening pages follows the same layout: four simple prompts, generous writing space and one small, manageable next step for tomorrow instead of trying to solve everything tonight. A few minutes of writing are enough, and an optional 8:8:8 breathing exercise with a gentler alternative rounds off the ritual.
Twelve weekly reflections, three monthly reviews and six worry-time pages for earlier in the day help you notice recurring thoughts and small accomplishments. There are no perfect routines and no sleep scores: you do not have to write every night or answer every question, and some evenings a single sentence is enough.
The journal was created by Tom Helmke from a personal evening practice, with accessible explanations and selected scientific references. It is intended for personal reflection and is not a medical treatment or a substitute for professional healthcare.

What research says about the methods
The studies below examine general methods that also appear in this journal. They do not show that this particular book works, and they are no substitute for professional advice or treatment.
-
Writing down open tasks before sleep
In a sleep-lab study, 57 healthy young adults spent five minutes before bed writing either a to-do list for the next few days or a list of tasks they had already completed. The to-do list group fell asleep faster on average, and the more specific the list, the faster they fell asleep. The study covered a single night in people without sleep disorders.
-
Habits take repetition
In one study, adults repeated a new behaviour daily in the same situation. Among participants with usable data, it took a median of 66 days for the behaviour to feel largely automatic, with wide differences between people. Missing the occasional day made little difference.
-
What writing can and cannot do
Studies on writing about personal experiences show small average effects that vary widely between people and situations. A review of journaling for mental illness found a small to moderate benefit, with very mixed evidence. A journal can be a useful tool, but it is not therapy.
